A toothless beak and feeding underwater
Turtles have no teeth; the jaws are sheathed in a keratinous beak whose edges shear food rather than grind it. The tongue is fixed to the floor of the mouth and cannot manipulate food, so most aquatic turtles feed in water: a rapid opening of the mouth combined with a sudden drop of the hyoid apparatus in the throat sucks in water and prey together, a mechanism called gape-and-suck feeding. Larger items are held in the beak and torn into pieces with the claws of the forelimbs.
Stomach, intestine, and the shift with age
Food passes down the esophagus into a simple, single-chambered stomach, where acid and enzymes begin breakdown, and then into the small intestine, the main site of absorption. In many familiar pet species, such as sliders, the diet shifts across life: juveniles take mostly insects and other animal prey, while adults eat progressively more plant material. The colon houses microbes that ferment some of that plant fiber, though far less extensively than in a grazing tortoise.
Ectothermy and the cloaca
As ectotherms, turtles digest at a rate set by body temperature, and basking after a meal speeds the process. The colon also reclaims water from the digesta before waste reaches the cloaca, the single shared chamber through which the digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts all empty at the vent.
