A fiber-driven herbivore gut
Rabbits are herbivores whose digestive system is built around a continuous intake of high-fiber plant material. Food moves through the mouth, esophagus, and a simple stomach into a long small intestine. Constant gut movement (motility) is central to how the rabbit digestive tract functions.
Hindgut fermentation in the cecum
The rabbit has a very large cecum — a fermentation chamber at the start of the large intestine — that houses microbes which break down fiber the animal cannot digest on its own. This makes the rabbit a hindgut fermenter, in contrast to foregut fermenters such as cattle. The cecum can hold a substantial portion of the gut's contents.
Cecotrophy
Rabbits sort their digesta: indigestible fiber is passed quickly as hard, round droppings, while finer, nutrient-rich material is fermented in the cecum and expelled as soft pellets called cecotropes. The rabbit re-ingests these cecotropes directly, a process called cecotrophy, to recover protein, vitamins, and other nutrients produced by gut microbes. This two-stage strategy is a defining feature of lagomorph digestion.
Why gut movement matters
Because the system depends on steady passage of fiber, the rabbit gut is adapted to near-continuous feeding on roughage. The balance of microbes in the cecum is closely tied to the type of fiber the rabbit eats. This article describes normal anatomy and physiology only.
