Upper airway
Air enters through the nostrils and nasal cavity, where it is warmed, moistened, and filtered. Ferrets have a keen sense of smell linked to their nasal anatomy. Air then travels through the pharynx and larynx toward the lower airway.
Lower airway and lungs
The trachea runs down the long, slender neck and branches into bronchi and bronchioles that end in alveoli, where gas exchange takes place. The lungs sit within an elongated chest that matches the ferret's tubular body shape. The lungs are divided into lobes.
Breathing mechanics
