Parrot skeletal system — pneumatic bones and a flight frame

Pneumatic bones

Many of a parrot's bones are pneumatic, meaning they are hollow and contain air spaces connected to the respiratory air sacs. This reduces overall weight while maintaining strength, an adaptation linked to flight. The skeleton is therefore lighter than that of a comparable mammal.

Flight-adapted structure

The breastbone bears a prominent keel that anchors the large flight muscles. Many bones are fused or reinforced to create a rigid, stable frame that withstands the forces of flight. The forelimbs are modified into wings.

Skull and beak

The skull is light, with large eye sockets and a beak that replaces the heavy jaws and teeth of mammals. In parrots the upper beak articulates with the skull in a way that gives it notable mobility and grip strength. The overall skeleton balances lightness with the strength needed for climbing and flight.
