Obligate carnivore physiology
Ferrets are obligate carnivores whose digestive systems are adapted to a diet high in animal protein and fat with very little plant fiber. They derive their essential nutrients from animal tissue. Their physiology is poorly suited to digesting large amounts of carbohydrate or fiber.
A very short gastrointestinal tract
The ferret's gastrointestinal tract is short and simple, and it lacks a functional cecum. As a result, food passes through quickly, with a notably rapid gut transit time compared with herbivores. This short, fast gut reflects a diet built around easily digested animal protein.
Stomach and intestines
Food moves from the simple stomach into a short small intestine where most digestion and absorption occur. Because there is little fermentation capacity, ferrets rely on enzymatic digestion of meat-based nutrients. The liver and pancreas supply bile and enzymes that support this process.
