Flexible spine
The cat's vertebral column is highly flexible, with loosely connected vertebrae and elastic discs that allow the back to arch, twist, and extend. This flexibility supports the cat's characteristic ability to right itself in mid-air and to compress and stretch the body when climbing or jumping. The tail vertebrae aid balance.
Limbs and clavicle
Cats have a small, free-floating clavicle that is not rigidly attached to the rest of the skeleton, allowing the shoulders and front legs a wide range of movement and helping the cat squeeze through narrow gaps. The hind limbs are powerful and built for leaping. The forelimbs absorb landing forces.
Skull and overall frame
The feline skull is short and rounded with large eye sockets suited to a predatory, low-light hunter. The overall skeleton is light and finely built relative to the muscle it carries. Growth plates in young cats close as the skeleton matures.
