Bearded dragon thermoregulation — ectothermy and skin

Ectothermy

Bearded dragons are ectotherms, meaning they rely on external heat sources to regulate body temperature rather than producing significant internal heat like mammals and birds. Their metabolic rate, activity, and digestion all rise and fall with body temperature. This dependence on outside heat is a defining feature of reptilian physiology.

Behavioral temperature control

Because they cannot warm themselves internally, bearded dragons control their temperature through behavior, such as basking to warm up and seeking shade or cooler areas to cool down. Moving between warmer and cooler zones lets the animal hold its body within a preferred temperature range. This back-and-forth movement is called thermoregulation.

Scaled skin

The body is covered in keratinized scales that protect against injury and reduce water loss. Reptiles periodically shed the outer skin layer as they grow. The skin works alongside behavior in managing heat and moisture, and this article presents that physiology as general reference.
