An upturned mouth for surface feeding
The betta's mouth is superior — angled upward — so the fish takes food most naturally at or just below the water surface, matching a wild diet of insect larvae, zooplankton and other small invertebrates. The jaws carry rows of small, conical teeth that grip prey, which is swallowed whole or torn by repeated bites rather than chewed. This surface-oriented mouth sits alongside the betta's other surface habit, air breathing with the labyrinth organ.
A true stomach
Behind a short esophagus lies a genuine sac-shaped stomach with gastric glands that secrete acid and digestive enzymes — a real anatomical difference from the goldfish and other cyprinids, which have no stomach at all. The chamber is small, holding only a modest meal at a time, and acid digestion there begins the breakdown of the animal protein that dominates the diet.
A short intestine and accessory organs
The intestine is short relative to body length, the classic signature of a carnivorous fish; herbivorous species need far more length to deal with plant material. Bile from the liver and gallbladder and secretions from pancreatic tissue — dispersed along vessels and mesentery rather than gathered into a compact organ, as in many teleosts — enter the front of the intestine, and absorption proceeds along its length before waste exits at the anus, just in front of the anal fin. Most nitrogenous waste, meanwhile, leaves not with the feces but as ammonia across the gills.
