A fundamentally different design
Birds do not breathe the way mammals do. Instead of expandable lungs, parrots have relatively rigid lungs combined with a set of thin-walled air sacs that extend through the body. This arrangement is one of the most distinctive features of avian anatomy.
Air sacs and unidirectional airflow
The air sacs act as bellows that move air through the lungs rather than as sites of gas exchange themselves. Air flows through the lung in largely one direction across two breathing cycles, so fresh air passes over the gas-exchange surfaces during both inhalation and exhalation. This flow-through design makes avian respiration highly efficient.
Gas exchange in the lungs
Within the lungs, gas exchange occurs in fine tubes called parabronchi and their tiny air capillaries, rather than in dead-end alveoli as in mammals. The continuous, one-directional flow keeps these surfaces well supplied with fresh air. Birds lack a muscular diaphragm and instead move air using the chest wall and air sacs.
Connection to the skeleton
Some air sacs connect to hollow, air-filled (pneumatic) bones, linking the respiratory and skeletal systems. This integration is part of the overall lightweight, flight-adapted body plan. This article describes normal avian respiratory anatomy as general educational reference.
