An elongated, flexible spine
The ferret's tubular body is built on a long vertebral column, typically seven cervical, fifteen thoracic, five to six lumbar, three sacral and around eighteen caudal vertebrae, with a rib pair on each thoracic segment. The joints between vertebrae allow unusually free bending, so a ferret can turn back on itself inside a passage barely wider than its own body — the skeleton of an animal shaped by hunting in burrows. The thorax is correspondingly long and narrow.
Short limbs and girdles
The limbs are short relative to the trunk, keeping the body low without sacrificing reach inside a tunnel. The clavicle is reduced to a small vestige, so the forelimb is slung to the trunk by muscle, as in other carnivores built for running and squeezing through gaps. Each foot carries five digits ending in curved, non-retractable claws — unlike a cat's, they cannot be drawn back into sheaths — used for digging and grip.
Skull and os penis
The skull is long, low and flattened, with strong zygomatic arches and large canine teeth; mature animals, especially males, develop a sagittal crest along the top of the skull that anchors the jaw-closing muscles. One further skeletal element is easy to overlook: like other mustelids, the male ferret has an os penis or baculum, a J-shaped bone that is a normal part of the species' skeleton.
