A large, fast four-chambered heart
The parrot's heart has four chambers — two atria and two ventricles — and lies in the cranial part of the body cavity within a pericardial sac. Relative to body mass the avian heart is larger than a comparable mammal's and beats considerably faster, sustaining the high metabolic rate that flight demands. The left ventricle wall is much thicker than the right.
Valves and the right aortic arch
The left atrioventricular valve is a membranous flap anchored by cords, but the right atrioventricular valve is unusual: a single muscular flap with no cords attached. Birds also retain only the right aortic arch, so the main artery leaving the heart curves to the right — the mirror image of the mammalian arrangement.
Blood and portal circulation
Blood follows the same two loops as in mammals, a pulmonary circuit through the lungs and a systemic circuit through the body, with oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood kept fully separate. Avian red blood cells are oval and keep their nuclei, unlike the round, anucleate cells of mammals. Birds also have a renal portal system that routes venous blood from the caudal body through the kidneys.
