Skin and coat
Feline skin has an outer epidermis and a deeper dermis, forming a flexible protective barrier. Most cats carry a dense coat of guard hairs and softer down hairs that insulate and protect the body. Cats groom frequently, and grooming distributes natural oils across the coat.
Whiskers and sensory hairs
Whiskers (vibrissae) are thick, specialized hairs rooted deeply in nerve-rich tissue, found on the face and elsewhere. They act as sensitive touch receptors that help the cat sense nearby objects and air movement. This makes the coat an important sensory organ as well as a barrier.
Retractable claws
Cats have protractible (commonly called retractable) claws that are normally held back within the toes and extended for climbing, gripping, and grasping. The claws grow in layers and are kept sharp through scratching, which sheds the outer sheath. Scent glands in the paws also leave chemical marks when scratching.
