Carapace and plastron
The tortoise shell is part of the skeleton, not a separate covering. Its domed upper half is the carapace, its flatter lower half the plastron, and the two are joined along each side by a bony bridge. Bony plates form the base; the keratinous scutes laid over them have seams that are offset from the bone sutures beneath.
Fused ribs and vertebrae
The carapace incorporates the trunk skeleton directly. Midline neural plates are fused to the vertebrae, the broad costal plates are expanded and fused ribs, and a ring of peripheral plates completes the rim. Because the ribs are locked into this rigid box, the chest wall cannot expand, so ventilation depends on abdominal muscles and limb movement rather than on a moving ribcage.
Girdles, limbs, and neck
Chelonians are the only vertebrates whose pectoral and pelvic girdles sit inside the ribcage. The cervical vertebrae stay mobile, and tortoises withdraw the head by folding the neck into a vertical S-shape. The hind limbs are short and columnar for bearing weight on land, while the forelimbs are flattened and used for walking and digging.
