Chinchilla dental anatomy — elodont teeth and continuous eruption

Dental formula and the diastema

A chinchilla has twenty teeth: one pair of incisors, one premolar and three molars in each quadrant, written 2 × (I 1/1, C 0/0, P 1/1, M 3/3). There are no canines. In their place lies the diastema, a long toothless gap separating the incisors at the front of the mouth from the cheek-tooth arcades behind, so cropping and grinding take place in two functionally separate compartments.

Elodont and hypsodont teeth

Every tooth is both hypsodont — very high-crowned — and elodont, meaning it has no true anatomical root, keeps a permanently open apex and erupts continuously throughout life. Most of each cheek tooth is reserve crown buried within the maxilla or mandible, with only a short clinical crown exposed in the mouth. The cheek teeth are built from transverse enamel laminae and meet in a nearly horizontal occlusal plane, forming two continuous grinding surfaces.

Incisors and wear

The incisors are long, curved chisels whose labial surface carries hard, orange-pigmented enamel while the lingual side is softer dentine. Because the two wear at different rates in use, the tip is continuously reshaped into a beveled edge. Continuous eruption is balanced against continuous wear from abrasive plant material, so under normal function the exposed crown length stays roughly constant.
