A lightweight skeleton
Rabbits have a notably light skeleton relative to their muscle mass; bone makes up a smaller fraction of total body weight than in many similarly sized mammals. This lightness suits a prey animal built for rapid acceleration and bounding escape. The light frame is paired with very strong hindlimb muscles.
Powerful hind limbs and a delicate spine
The hind limbs are long and muscular, generating the force for the rabbit's powerful hops. Because these muscles are strong relative to the lightweight vertebral column, the rabbit's spine is comparatively fragile. The lumbar (lower back) region in particular bears large forces during movement.
Support and posture
