Snake digestive system — a highly distensible carnivore gut

Swallowing prey whole

Snakes are carnivores that swallow prey whole, often items wider than their own head. Highly flexible jaw and skull connections, together with a stretchy body wall, allow the mouth and throat to expand dramatically. Backward-pointing teeth help draw prey inward during swallowing.

A distensible stomach and gut

The snake's elongated stomach and digestive tract are highly distensible, stretching to accommodate large meals. After a big meal the digestive organs and their activity can increase markedly to process the food, then scale back between meals. This allows snakes to eat infrequently but in large amounts.

Digestion and the cloaca

Powerful stomach acids and enzymes break down the entire prey item, including soft tissue and some bone, over a period that depends on meal size and body temperature. As ectotherms, snakes digest faster when warm. Waste is eliminated through the cloaca, the shared exit for the digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts.
