Obligate carnivore design
Cats are obligate carnivores, meaning their bodies are adapted to obtain essential nutrients from animal tissue. Their digestive tract is comparatively short, reflecting a diet that is high in protein and fat and low in plant matter. They have a limited ability to digest large amounts of carbohydrate.
Mouth and stomach
Cat teeth are built for grasping and shearing rather than grinding, and feline saliva contains little starch-digesting enzyme. Food passes down the esophagus to a simple, single-chambered stomach where acid and enzymes begin protein breakdown. The stomach then releases food gradually into the small intestine.
Intestine, liver, and pancreas
The small intestine is the main site of digestion and nutrient absorption, while the large intestine reabsorbs water and forms feces. The liver and pancreas supply bile and digestive enzymes. Cats depend on certain nutrients found in animal tissue — such as taurine and preformed vitamin A — that they cannot make in sufficient amounts themselves.
