Parrot digestive system — crop, gizzard, and cloaca

Beak and crop

Parrots use a strong, hooked beak to manipulate and crack food rather than chewing with teeth, which birds lack. Food passes down the esophagus to the crop, a pouch where it can be stored and moistened before further digestion. The crop helps regulate the flow of food into the rest of the tract.

Two-part stomach and gizzard

The avian stomach has two parts: the proventriculus, which secretes digestive acids and enzymes, and the gizzard (ventriculus), a muscular chamber that grinds food. Because birds have no teeth, the gizzard performs the mechanical breakdown that chewing would otherwise do. From there, food moves into the intestine for absorption.

Intestine and cloaca

Nutrients are absorbed in the intestine, and waste passes toward the cloaca. The cloaca is a single shared chamber through which the digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts all empty. This means birds expel feces and urinary waste together, another distinctive feature of avian anatomy.
