An omnivorous reptile gut

Bearded dragons are omnivores whose diet shifts across life stages between more animal- and more plant-based foods. Food passes from the mouth and esophagus into a simple stomach and then through the intestine. Like other reptiles, they have a cloaca, a shared exit for the digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts.

Temperature and digestion

As ectotherms, bearded dragons depend on external heat to drive their metabolism, and digestion proceeds efficiently only when the body is warm enough. Gut transit and enzyme activity are therefore strongly influenced by environmental temperature. This links the digestive system tightly to thermoregulation.

Stomach and intestine

The stomach secretes acid and enzymes that begin breaking down food, and the intestine handles most absorption of nutrients and water.
