Mouth and pharyngeal teeth
Goldfish have no teeth on the jaws. Food is taken by protruding the mouth and is processed further back, where a pair of lower pharyngeal bones — modified fifth gill arches — each carry a row of stout pharyngeal teeth. These grind food against a horny chewing pad on the base of the skull, so mechanical breakdown happens in the throat rather than at the lips.
No true stomach
The goldfish is agastric: there is no anatomically distinct stomach, no gastric glands and no acid-secreting region. A short esophagus opens into a slightly widened anterior intestine, and cyprinids also lack the pyloric ceca found in many other fishes. Digestion therefore proceeds at close to neutral pH throughout, and no chamber exists to store a large meal.
Intestine and accessory glands
The intestine is long and folded back on itself several times within the body cavity, a length that suits an omnivorous diet containing plant material. Bile from the liver and gall bladder and enzymes from pancreatic tissue enter near its start; in cyprinids much of the exocrine pancreas is dispersed inside the liver as a hepatopancreas rather than forming a separate compact organ. Absorption occurs along the intestine before waste leaves through the anus.
