Cat nervous system — brain, balance, and specialized senses

Brain, spinal cord, and nerves

The central nervous system — brain and spinal cord — is protected by the skull, the vertebral column and cushioning cerebrospinal fluid. The cerebellum, which coordinates timing and precision of movement, is well developed in the cat, matching an animal that judges leaps and lands on narrow surfaces. Peripheral nerves carry sensation inward and motor commands outward, and the autonomic portion runs involuntary functions such as heart rate, pupil size, and digestion.

Balance and the righting reflex

The vestibular labyrinth of the inner ear senses rotation and gravity and works with vision to keep the cat oriented. A falling cat rights itself in a fixed sequence — the head turns first to level with the ground, then the front of the body follows, then the hindquarters — guided by vestibular and visual input. The very flexible spine, and a clavicle reduced to a small remnant floating in muscle, let the front and rear halves of the body rotate partly independently, which is what makes the maneuver mechanically possible.

Whiskers and special senses

A cat's whiskers are sinus hairs: each grows from a follicle wrapped around a blood-filled sinus and dense nerve endings, turning the stiff hair into a lever that reports touch and air movement. They stand on the muzzle and above the eyes, with a further set — the carpal whiskers — on the back of each foreleg. The eyes carry a reflective layer behind the retina, the tapetum lucidum, and a vertically slit pupil; hearing extends well into the ultrasonic range, with each outer ear swiveled independently by numerous small muscles; and a vomeronasal organ in the roof of the mouth samples scent during the open-mouthed flehmen grimace.
