Mouth to small intestine
The chinchilla is a herbivore with a simple, single-chambered stomach. Fibrous plant material is ground by the continuously erupting cheek teeth, swallowed, and mixed with acid and enzymes in the stomach before passing into a long small intestine, where enzymatic digestion and the absorption of protein, fat, starch and minerals occur. Like other rodents, chinchillas have no functional vomiting reflex, so movement through the tract is effectively one-way.
Cecum and colon
Fermentation happens in the hindgut. Beyond the small intestine sits a large, sacculated cecum holding a dense microbial population that breaks down cellulose and other fiber the animal's own enzymes cannot digest, releasing short-chain fatty acids absorbed as a major energy source. The colon is exceptionally long and coiled, and its proximal part sorts the digesta: fine, bacteria-rich particles are moved back toward the cecum while coarse fiber is carried on and formed into hard fecal pellets.
Cecotrophy
Cecal contents are also periodically packed into soft, mucus-coated pellets called cecotrophs, which the chinchilla takes directly from the anus and swallows whole. Cecotrophs differ from the hard pellets in being richer in microbial protein and in B vitamins made by the cecal flora. Passing them through the stomach and small intestine a second time lets the animal absorb nutrients produced in a chamber downstream of the main absorptive gut.
